The COVID pandemic has seen a significant shift in many families’ daily life and habits. Families with pets should be on the lookout for signs of pet anxiety due to changing schedules and owners spending less time at home.

One of the most notable behaviors that point to anxiety is whimpering or barking incessantly. While occasional bouts of sadness are normal for animals, extended periods can indicate the pet is not handling the changes in its life well. A dog’s facial expression can also tell whether they’re feeling content or distressed, and owners should watch out for excessive noise licking, salivation, or head shaking.

Dogs are also more prone to destructive behavior when anxious, lashing out at their discontent. Owners need to look for the reason behind a sudden change towards destructiveness rather than punishing the dog immediately.

If anxiety symptoms persist, consider hiring a dog walker to improve your pet’s social life while the family is away, or consult a veterinarian for assistance.
